Southern Star offers Solar Array facility tours to Opportunity Center and Sorgho Elementary to celebrate Earth Day

(Owensboro, KY – Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc.) – Southern Star is proud to host tours of its solar array field to selected audiences in the Owensboro community to celebrate Earth Day.

Southern Star’s solar array, located east of its headquarters building at 4700 State Route 56 in Owensboro, spans approximately four acres and was constructed in 2021. It is comprised of 2,300 individual panels which produce 1,200 megawatt hours of energy annually, offsetting the headquarters facility’s annual energy demand of approximately 1,100 megawatt hours. Southern Star’s headquarters is the first known net zero carbon-based energy facility of its size in Owensboro.

Tours will take place on Friday, April 21, kicking off with a session for Opportunity Center of Owensboro’s clients from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by Sorgho Elementary’s fourth-grade class from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

“We are excited to share information on our solar array with the Opportunity Center of Owensboro and Sorgho elementary students,” said Shawn Patterson, President & Chief Executive Officer. “Our company is committed to a clean energy future and providing education to our community on energy sources such as natural gas and solar is a part that commitment.”

Greg Blandford, Director of Land, Environment & ESG Strategy, and Justin Brown, Leader of Facility Services, will lead the tours, while providing and information on the array’s construction and how it is one of many ways Southern Star will reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Local media are welcome to attend anytime during the sessions. Interview opportunities will be available with Shawn Patterson at approximately 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. Events will be moved indoors for both groups in the event of inclement weather.

Southern Star is proud to inform the community about this project, which aligns with the company’s vision: One community working together to be the leading provider of clean, safe and reliable energy for tomorrow.
