Southern Star hosts local students for Gas 101 event in Kansas City

Southern Star recently welcomed students to our Kansas City-Shawnee office for a “Gas 101” event to showcase day-to-day operations and career opportunities in the natural gas industry. Hogan Preparatory Academy High School in Kansas City, Missouri; Turner High School in Kansas City, Kansas; and Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas had students in attendance.

After a welcome and safety orientation, Charles Crews, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer in Owensboro, provided his own inspirational success story toto share that nothing is impossible with some hard work and determination. From there, students split up to experience different demonstrations conducted by Southern Star team members.

Various workshops included pipeline welding, corrosion, pigging, and more. Welding, as one of the more hands-on activities, was very well received.

“Welding is something I want to do, so learning about welding, pipes, pressures and corrosion can all be helpful if I decide to come into this industry,” said Timothy Mapes, a Turner High School senior.

Of course, the day wasn’t just about fun and interesting demonstrations, explains Twanna Hardy, Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in Owensboro.

“In alignment with our DEI strategy and our commitment to the community, it is always a win when we have the opportunity to educate the community, specifically students, on the importance of what we do at Southern Star and the natural gas community,” Hardy said.

Marc Wilson, Project Manager in Shawnee, agreed, saying that the day was truly impactful for the students and for himself.

“I really enjoyed it,” Wilson said. “It was great to see all the smiling faces and the kids were very engaged.”

Southern Star is proud celebrate our team and industry while   paving the way for success for future leaders in the natural gas industry.
